As broadband providers look to complete more installations with the technicians they already have, improving efficiency in the field is increasingly important. Yet many parts of fiber construction remain manual, from pushing rod through conduit and feeding fiber by hand to troubleshooting pathway problems after installation has already begun.

Why Duct Proofing Before Fiber Installation Can Save Time Later

The contractor installing conduit is not always the same contractor responsible for installing the fiber. Days, weeks, or even months can pass between those two stages of a project.

During that time, problems can develop.

Couplings can fail. Construction activity can damage or crush conduit. Tight bends can make a pathway impassable. Dirt or sand can enter an open duct.

Duct proofing gives installers an opportunity to identify those problems before the fiber installation begins.

Without that step, technicians may arrive with trucks, equipment, a compressor, and fiber installation tools only to discover an obstruction after work has started. “I think the overarching theme is finding the problem before the fiber shows up to the job site,” Lowe said.

Jameson’s Hot Rodder Brings Motorized Power to Duct Proofing

Traditionally, pushing rod through conduit can require repetitive, hand-over-hand work. The Jameson Hot Rodder mechanizes that process, allowing installers to push rod faster and with more force than they typically could manually. That creates advantages beyond speed.

If there is a minor obstruction in the duct, the additional pushing capability may help installers work through it.

The Hot Rodder can also be used with standard duct rodders and locating solutions, allowing technicians to proof the pathway and help identify where a problem is located.

United Tel-Supply’s Doyle Sheets recently saw that capability firsthand during a Hot Rodder field demonstration.

The conduit being tested had been installed months earlier, and sand had entered the duct and accumulated in one location. By proofing the conduit, the problem was identified before fiber installation and the team was able to determine where the obstruction was located rather than searching along the entire route.

That is the real value of duct proofing: finding the problem before it becomes an installation problem.

Fiber Installation Is Another Opportunity for Greater Efficiency

The same idea applies once it is time to install the fiber. In many FTTH applications, technicians are still manually feeding small round or flat drop fiber through conduit, using methods like hand pushing, fish tape, or pull string.

Those methods can get the job done, but Jameson’s Fiber Driver gives installers a way to mechanize the process.

Powered by a standard battery drill, the Fiber Driver helps push fiber through duct without requiring technicians to adopt a proprietary power-tool platform. That simplicity is intentional. Installers can continue using familiar equipment while reducing repetitive manual motion and increasing installation speed.

The time savings can add up quickly.

Jameson estimates that an installation that could take 30 or 40 minutes manually may take roughly four or five minutes with a mechanized process, depending on the application.

For a contractor completing multiple drops every day, the value is not simply finishing one installation faster. It is the additional installations that can be completed with the time saved.

Extending the Fiber Driver for Longer and Different Applications

The Fiber Driver was originally designed to push fiber through duct, but Jameson has continued expanding what installers can do with the platform.

For longer runs, the Fiber Driver can be paired with Jameson’s Air Boost, which uses compressed air to help move the fiber farther through the pathway. Jameson has typically seen the Air Boost extend achievable pushing distance by at least three times compared with the Fiber Driver alone.

The Fiber Driver can also be paired with Jameson’s Little Buddy duct rodder using an adapter, giving technicians additional options for running fish tape or installing pull string.

These accessories allow contractors to build around the applications they encounter most often rather than bringing the same setup to every installation.

Doyle has seen that approach with United Tel customers. Some want a Fiber Driver available on every technician truck while keeping one or two Air Boost units available for longer runs.

Making New Tools Easier for Installers to Adopt

Introducing a new tool only improves efficiency if technicians are willing and able to use it. That is one reason Jameson has designed products like the Fiber Driver and Hot Rodder around familiar power tools rather than requiring a separate proprietary battery ecosystem. Installers can use tools they likely already own or can easily access.

Doyle has also found that the Fiber Driver requires very little explanation during customer demonstrations. Once technicians see how it connects to the duct and begin pushing fiber, the application becomes clear.

That ease of adoption is especially valuable as broadband providers and contractors look for ways to increase productivity without simply adding more technicians.

It’s a challenge Doyle Sheets of United Tel-Supply sees across the industry as contractors look for ways to get more from the technicians they already have.

“Everybody’s trying to do more with less, and with the labor market being what it is, having a hard time finding those technicians, it is more important than ever to make them more efficient and make it easier on the job,” Sheets said.

Mechanizing repetitive tasks can reduce physical effort, help technicians complete installations faster, and in some applications reduce the number of people required for a particular task.

For Jameson, that also means making sure the tools themselves don’t create another hurdle for installers.

“We want to eliminate that barrier of entry to being able to use a product that’s going to make their lives easier, but also make them more money at the same time,” Lowe said.
